Areas to Support

By supporting scholarships, research, and service programs, you can make a difference. Scholarships enable students to maintain focus on their goals rather than financial concerns, and by supporting faculty research and service programs, you are helping promote a future of better health care in Indiana.

The Resource Center for Innovation in Clinical Nursing Education

The Resource Center for Innovation in Clinical Nursing Education (RCICNE) was designed to accommodate new clinical teaching models that incorporate the use of simulation and other informational technologies. Students must have access to learning environments where they can immerse themselves in real-world clinical experiences and their diverse learning needs can be met. The facility includes classrooms with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, interactive teaching tools, teaching cubicles, an open flex area, videoconferencing and observation areas, 2 computer classrooms, a multimedia teaching classroom, and simulation rooms. The goals are simple: to prepare students for today's fast-paced world and prepare safe, thoughtful practitioners, resulting in increased patient safety.

Scholarships

A named scholarship is meaningful for several reasons:

  • It provides a lasting tribute to the person for whom it is named,
  • It makes a difference in the lives of students, and
  • It establishes the importance of philanthropy in the minds of nursing students as they begin their careers.

Named scholarships can be established by creating an endowed or annual scholarship.

Endowed scholarships

An endowed scholarship is established with a $10,000 gift that can be provided in a lump sum or through scheduled payments, and once it is completely funded, will generate approximately five percent of the earned income on an annual basis. The amount awarded will continue to increase in value as the stock market increases, and a deserving student will receive tuition assistance while the principal of the fund is still intact. Thus, the named scholarship will exist in perpetuity to benefit future students.

Annual Scholarships

An annual, named scholarship can be established at any level you choose, covering the cost of all or part of a student’s tuition, fees, and books. A minimum gift of $1,000 is recommended in order to provide meaningful assistance to the student. These scholarships are distributed in their entirety.

Supporting scholarships

Gifts made in support of scholarships are tax-deductible contributions and can be made through an outright gift, a pledge, or a planned gift. Payable to Indiana University Foundation and dedicated to the School of Nursing, contributions may take the form of cash, appreciated stock, a bequest, real estate, other assets, or a combination of those contributions.

Research

The school has a major research focus on the quality of life in chronic illness and has several centers and programs dedicated to that purpose.

These include the Center for Enhancing Quality of Life in Chronic Illness (CEQL), the Mary Margaret Walther Program for Cancer Research, and the Behavioral Cooperative Oncology Group (BCOG).

Faculty also conduct research in other areas, including:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Diabetes
  • Renal disease
  • Cardiovascular disease and stroke
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Mental health
  • Community health

Service

The mission of the Center for Community and International Affairs (CCIA)  is to prepare future nursing professionals for civic engagement in a global society. The center fosters and promotes innovative approaches to clinical education, service learning, and community-responsive research and serves as a resource to students, staff, faculty, and the community. Linking with numerous community partners, the CCIA strives to offer students real-world learning experiences through service and research that meets community needs. Further, the direct service projects of the school represent exemplary community partnerships that provide both students and faculty opportunities for practice, advocacy, and research. Among these projects are the Maternity Outreach and Mobilization (MOM) Project and the Brown County Health Support Clinic.

When local organizations collaborate in support of community initiatives, CCIA will also represent the school with such groups as the Clarian Health Partners Community Partnerships Committee and the Indianapolis Friendly AccessSM Coalition.
